Traveling from Luang Prabang to Chiang Rai

You can travel from Luang Prabang in Laos to Chiang Rai in Thailand by bus and by slow boat. The trip on the slowboat is one of the most scenic trips in South East Asia, it is a long trip, but it takes you through the thick jungles of northern Laos on the Mekong river.

 

Bus from Luang Prabang to Chiang Rai

 

Distance: 750 kilometers

Duration: 14 hours

Price: 242.000 kip

Departure time: 17:00

 

You can take the bus to Chiang Rai at the Na Luang station in Luang Prabang. The bus is going to Chiang Mai, but also makes a stop in Chiang Rai.

Tickets for the bus can be bought at the bus station, but make sure to be on time, because the bus can fill up quickly. The bus fare is 242.000 kip and the trip should take around 14 hours, but it can be a bit longer.

 

Traveling from Luang Prabang to Chiang Rai with the slow boat

 

Duration: 2 days

Price: 130.000 plus 240.000 kip

 

It is possible to travel from Luang Prabang over the Mekong River by boat. There are many slow boats that travel between Luang Prabang and Huay Xai at the Thai border. It is a two day trip because the boats cannot travel at night.

 

You first need to buy a ticket from Luang Prabang to Pak Beng and stay there for the night. The next day you then need to buy a ticket travel to Huay Xai. You cannot buy direct tickets from Luang Prabang to Huay Xai, you must buy your (expensive) onward ticket at Pak Beng.

 

At Huay Xai you can get a minibus or big bus to Chiang Rai. The last bus leaves around 17:00.

Duration: 6-7 hours to Huay Xai

Price: 360.000 kip

 

There are speedboats available that do the Luang Prabang to Huay Xai trip in 6 to 7 hours. The price for the speedboat is 360.000 kips. The trip is relatively save but not very comfortable.

 

When you arrive at Huay Xai you can take a minibus or big bus to Chiang Rai which ia another 1,5 hours.
