Train from Bangkok to Chiang Rai
Duration : 13 to 15 hours train to Chiang Mai plus 4 hours by bus to Chiang Rai.
Price: between 271 and 1.453 baht for the train and 57 baht for the bus
There is a night train going from Hua Lampong station in Bangkok to Chiang Mai. After that you need to go to the Arcade bus station in Chiang Mai to arrange transport by bus to Chiang Rai. The night train leaves twice a day at 18:00 and at 19:20 (May 2013, mind you times can change). The trip takes between 13 and 15 hours. It is common that there is a little delay.
(Second class sleeper with airco)
There are several classes to chose from. First class gives you your own cabin with your own toilet. In second class you might have to share your cabin with other people, there are 4 sleep places per cabin. There is a difference in price for sleeping on the lower or upper bed. Low is a bit more expensive as the bed is a little bigger. You can also chose to take a second class seat where you can sleep if you are lucky, but you will not have a designated bed.
There are also a few regular trains where you can get 3rd class tickets for 271 baht.

Bus from Bangkok to Chiang Rai
Duration : 11 to 12 hours
Price : between 448 and 904 baht
During the day there are several buses leaving from Bangkok Northern Bus terminal (Mo Chit) to Chiang Rai New Bus Terminal. Buses don't go as frequent as to Chiang Mai. There are buses at 07:50, 20:00, 20:30 and 21:30 (March 2012, but times can change).
There are VIP buses and second class buses. Bus tickets range between 448 and 904 baht (May 2013) depending the company and class of your bus.
