How to get from Bangkok to Koh Samui

There are several ways how to travel from Bangkok to Koh Samui in Thailand. Koh Samui has an airport, so you can fly to the Island, which is obviously by far the quickest way to get there, but also by far the mostr expensive way. Bangkok Airways has a monopoly on this route so the prices will stay high (3200 baht). You can also travel to the Island with the bus or train combined with a ferry.

 

Flying from Bangkok to Koh Samui

 

Duration: 1 hour 5 minutes

Price: 3200 baht (one way)

 

You can fly from Suvarnabumi Airport in Bangkok direct to Samui Airport on Koh Samui with Bangkok Airways. The flight takes one hour and five mintes and the regular price is around 3200 baht for a one way ticket.

There is also another option. You can fly from Bangkok to Surat Thani airport and from there take bus ferry connection to Koh Samui. Nok Air offers combination packages where you have a combined plane and ferry ticket. Nok Air flies from Don Muang Airport in Bangkok, not Suvarnabumi. 

 

If you book in advance Air Asia sometimes has very interesting offers. At Surat Thani airport it is very easy to arrange transport to Koh Samui. There is a ticket office where you can buy two types of tickets. With the Lompraya high speed Catamaran for 600 baht or with the slower ferry for 350 baht. This includes transfer to the pier and the ferry crossing; Air Asia also flies from Don Mueng Airport!

Every day several air-conditioned buses leave Bangkok from the Southern Bus Terminal to Surat Thani, from there you need to arrange transport to the pier and take a ferry. At any travel agency in Bangkok you can arrange bus rides including ferry tickets from Bangkok to Koh Samui.

 

The Lomprayah High Speed Catamaran offers connections to Koh Samui via Chumpon. There are two buses a day that leave their office in Khao San Road to Chumpon. At Chumpon you will board the High Speed Catamaran which will make stops at Koh Tao and Koh Phangan.

Traveling from Bangkok to Koh Samui through Surat Thani

 

Duration: (to Surat Thani) 8,5-11 hours

Price: (to Surat Thani) 297-1379 baht

 

Several trains leave Bangkok’s Hua Lampong Station for Surat Thani daily. The trip to Surat Thani takes between 8 and a halve and 11 hours, depending the time you leave. The price for a third class ticket with fan is 297 baht and a first class aircon ticket can cost up to 1379 baht.

The train station is located 14 kilometers west of Surat Thani at Phun Phin. At the train station transport to Koh Samui can be arranged. Train / bus / ferry combination tickets are also available at travel agencies all over Bangkok.
