Quito

Quito is the capital of Equador and was founded in 1534 on the ruins of an ancient Inca city. It was and still is a city of grand churches with detailed  hand carved facades and altars. A place where 500 years old buildings, which have survived earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, open into medieval style courtyards, complete with columned archways and stone fountains.

In 1978, Quito was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the first city to earn that designation. Bare in mind that at 2,850m above sea level, Quito is one of the highest capital cities in the world and the air is very thin here.
