The emerald Buddha that is now housed in the Grand Palace in Bangkok was found in Chiang Rai. A relatively new temple, but an absolute tourist attraction is the White Temple about 10 kilometers south of the city. A visit to Chiang Rai is not complete without a visit to the white temple.

Golden Triangle

About 40 kilometers North of Chiang Rai you will find the Golden Triangle. It got this name because of the historical connection with the opium trade in this part of the kingdom. The golden triangle is now popular by tourists because of its natural beauty. Densely forests, the mighty Mekong river and the mountains where you can still find the ancient hill tribes are the main attractions.
