For sunset it is also possible to trek up the hill by elephant which also takes about 20 minutes. Be careful when walking down the hill in the dark after sunset. Date: End of the 9th century, Reign: Yasovarman I, Religion: Hindu (Shiva)

Phnom Bakheng was the State Temple of the first capital at Angkor and located at the centre of the first capital of Angkor which formed a square of about 4km surrounded by a moat of which the south west quarter is still visible. The remains of an inner enclosure of 650 by 436 metres surround the base of the hill. Phnom Bakheng is a 'natural mound' five tiered pyramid temple, the bulk of which is hewn from the bed-rock and faced with sandstone.

The location of Phnom Bakheng gives good views over the surrounding landscape and of Angkor Wat and is particularly nice at and sunset. Less crowded during sunrise.
